There are pictures and photos which will allow you to draw you ideas to scale, taking much of the guesswork out of planning.
Fresh paint is one of the most economical places to start. Black, white and different shades of grey are very modernistic, as are varying shades of beige. In addition to painting the ceiling and walls, do you have pieces of furniture which would work with a fresh coat of paint? Before you begin painting, notice the natural light. Are there plenty of windows or do you have a windowless room?
You will also want to consider what you use the room for; kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room or family room. One of the hallmarks of modern design is clean, clear and open spaces. That means a few well-placed items and the rest of the brick brace goes. This is especially true if you are reworking the kitchen. Make sure that you have plenty of cupboard space for small appliances.
Do you need to replace the floor? If you can use the floor that is in place this will help with keeping the cost down. If you do need to replace it, look for discontinued materials, or watch for big sales. You will be much more happy with your completed update if you have stayed within your budget.
Now consider the items you want as focal points in the room, can they be purchased at an auction, estate sale or a consignment store? Repetition of a primary color works well if you have chosen to go with a monochromatic color scheme. Some of the most popular materials being used in the upscale modern design are stone, tile, wood, and granite.
Most importantly is items that you really like and enjoy being around. Your ultra-modern design will be much more pleasurable if you are surrounded by pieces that you like. Most of all have fun working on your design.
